BACKGROUND
We haven't realized yet that there is a lot of great talent and creativity we haven't yet seen in this world. Today, 200 million people are suffering serious physical disabilities. There are 350,000 people worldwide and about 10,000 in Japan who are diagnosed with ALS. An incurable disease in which motor neurons that move the body age, and the whole body gradually becomes immobile.
PROJECT
The project aims to fulfill their wishes by utilizing technologies to create a new tool to help people with ALS to communicate with others by physical expressions and achieve the future where they will not have to give up their physicality anymore to increase their wellbeing.
PROCESS
We developed a digital avatar with a new user interface that mirrors the body and allows people with disabilities to operate various softwares. By attaching electromyography sensors to the individual’s body to obtain biological information, and then converting the information obtained from their minute muscular activities into data, individuals can freely manipulate avatars in the digital spaces.
RESULTS
We've also held an eSports trial event for people with disabilities where they can navigate games online together with people without disabilities There were no boundaries regarding playabilities due to the differences of their physical abilities. This trial demonstrated that this interface allows people with disabilities access educational or professional opportunities in the metaverse space.
