Dentsu Lab

ABOUT

This project will change the way we deal with things. By adding technology and creativity to discarded or broken objects, we not only reduce waste, but also create new functions and value. We are exploring the possibility of future up-cycling to heal people and the earth.

CHALLENGE

In the 2020s, the weight of all man-made things exceeded the weight of all living things on Earth. Every week, we create more things than our own weight, but we live in an age where the future is not just about creating new things.

APPROACH

We focused on “kintsugi”, a traditional Japanese technique of making something new by beautifully restoring broken objects. In kintsugi, chipped or broken vessels are glued together with lacquer, and the damaged areas are decorated with gold powder or colored lacquer. If the chipping is large, pieces of other vessels may be used. The decorated scratch marks become a unique and beautiful pattern.

RESULTS

Broken cups and teacups are gold-plated with parts that contain various functions. Teacups with Peltier elements, which can control temperature by changing the direction of electricity, allow you to enjoy a new kind of sipping experience, while teacups with actuators that convert electrical signals into motion allow you to enjoy vibrations as a new taste sensation.
